What is SciFi/Fantasy? Guest Post by @GeneDoucette and Giveaway from @twcs_pubhouse

To continue the celebration of SciFi month, I have a thought provoking guest post by the author of the Immortal novels, Gene Doucette!

What is SF/F?

I have recently been tasked with a subject of great importance: sit down and write about the different science fiction and fantasy sub-categories.

This doesnt sound like an unreasonable assignment, I grant.  And, since I actually am an author who writes things in the SF/F genre—Im even a SFWA member, no doubt because someone over there made a horrid mistake—one might imagine I have the qualifications to accomplish this job.

I do not.

Heres the first problem: I write stuff and people tell me what genre it is.  It turns out that genre was SF/F for just about everything Ive done, and thats fine, its only that I think the reason what I write fits in that genre is because the genre is far from a monolithic thing.

Lets start with the idea that weve combined what were already two categories—science fiction and fantasy.  I am sure that somewhere on the Internet is a lengthy discussion of the historical significance of this merging of these types, although my guess is it has a lot more to do with bookstores needing to consolidate shelf space than anything else.

There are forty-six different science fiction subcategories, according to advanced research I just did in Google.  I havent heard of most of them, and you probably havent either, but for the record, I think Id like to write something in slipstream one day, because thats the coolest-sounding genre label Ive ever seen.  What is it?  I dont know, but Im totally in.

The same search of fantasy categories also yields forty-six subcategories.  This is either an astonishing coincidence or Im doing something wrong.  (Or Wiki only counts that high?)  Seriously, this should be an X-file.

The fantasy categories are equally diverse, including things like Bangsian fantasy—concerning famous people in the afterlife(!)--superhero fiction and, once again, slipstream.  I didnt know that most of these were distinct subcategories until now, and according to Amazon Ive written in one.

Im not going to talk about all these categories, but I would like to spend a little time unpacking why it is there happen to be so many of them.

Genre categorization is what happens when a lot of people decide they would like a better way to find the things they want to read.  I know a lot of authors who rebel at the notion of labeling their book one thing or another (Im one of those authors a lot of the time, but in my case its because I legitimately dont know what to call what I wrote) but the point of all of this is discover-ability.  For instance, if you read an interesting story on what it might have been like for Abraham Lincoln to meet Charon on the river Styx, it turns out there are a whole bunch of stories out there like this in Bangsian fantasy.  If youre deeply involved in the lives of martial arts masters in ancient China, let me tell you all about Wuxia fantasy.

The combined ninety-something sub-categories in science fiction and fantasy speak to the strength and variety of the whole SF/F genre.  The obvious next question is: what does it mean for something to be in the SF/F genre in the first place?  What do all those categories have in common?

Theres a long answer to this.  Somebodys probably written a masters thesis somewhere for a very long answer, and its likely someone else on this very blog tour has also approached the question.  Heres the short answer, though: fantasy and science fiction—and all the subcategories—are about almost-reality.  Theyre what the author imagines might happen if the world we live in was different in one or two fundamental ways.  Theyre the ideas we all have as children—what if I could fly? What if I could make that kids head explode? What if I was invisible?—given voice.  No, but really: what if I could fly?  How would that change the world?

Sub-categories tell readers how to find the books that talk about very particular speculations on the subject, but theyre all dealing with the same kind of question.

That question is: What if?

Armchair BEA Day 2 ~ Social Media

We tweet, chat, PM, and like so many times a day. There are new ways to communicate popping up everyday and our old favorites are evolving, sometimes not for the better.

The number one rule of social media should be don't post anything that would embarrass you if your family saw it. That goes for blog reviews as well. There is a difference between giving constructive criticism and bashing. Unfortunately, I've seen more than enough bashing this last year. Social Media is the easiest way to sling the nasty stuff and not think of the consequences.

Some of you in the states might know about the skit on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Celebrities Read Mean Tweets. Regular Joes tweet whatever they want and don't think those celebs will see them. They do. Authors also see the reader's mean reviews and some best selling romance authors are responding by reading those reviews.

So, what we say here as bloggers goes out into the social media stratosphere and will live in one form or another forever. Remember, do no harm, but take no crap. Be constructive with your posts, tweets, pics, and status updates. If you have a strong opinion, be prepared to back it up.

Let me know what you think of my philosophy? Do you agree? Comment here or hit me up on one of my social media outlets.

She's gonna rock his world...

Danny Ayres has always lived his life on his terms. As a marketing exec for a big-time record label, he never had to look far for a willing fling, and rarely gave repeat performances. When he falls for a once-in-a-lifetime woman, he knows that even he can't negotiate out of this deal. But when in the same week he loses his job and his proposal falls flat, he starts to wonder if he's lost his touch.

Hannah Mercury has always found comfort in the straightforward procedures of civil service, and has organized her suburban life to high standards. Recently estranged from her husband and vulnerable from a careless indiscretion, she knows it's wise to keep Danny at arms' length.

During a chance meeting at lunch, Danny strikes up a conversation with Hannah, and the two forge an unlikely friendship. But after a brief and unexpected encounter takes the two beyond the platonic and into the erotic, Hannah realizes just why Danny's only been successful at one-night stands. She makes a proposition to teach him, in way he never dreamed possible, what it takes to REALLY satisfy a woman sexually and win back his dream girl.

But can they satisfy their carnal desires without losing control of their hearts?

“Wanna go to lunch again?” she asked.

Trying to keep his cool, Danny rolled back in his office chair. “On a Monday?”

Hannah laughed. “Come on, I’ve been waiting all weekend to see you.”

Danny tried to be as aloof as possible. “Okay, but it can’t take long.”

“We can pick one of the quickie spots in the Arts District,” resolved Hannah. “Besides, parking is free on that side of Downtown. See you at noon?”

Danny smiled at how determined she was. “Nooners it is.”

“No, sweetie—just lunch,” she said, and winked. He laughed. She sure did have a bit of the devil in her. It made her almost irresistible.

She was cool the whole way there. Not once did they talk about what happened last Friday at the bar—and after. Danny was starting to feel so at ease that he let his guard down. They talked about the final steps of getting the fire station built, and of some of Danny’s plans for marketing the Grand Opening. It was like old times, and Danny wondered whether Hannah had realized how far they’d gotten and decided to pull back, too.

Once they got to the Arts District and found parking, though, she turned toward him, placing her hand on his thigh. “I thought about you all weekend,” she said as she caressed it.

Danny laughed. “That’s no fun.”

Hannah let her hand move up. “Oh, but it was, Danny. I touched myself and thought of you. Of all the things I want you to do to me. I can’t come anymore without thinking of you.” She cupped his growing erection, and leaned over to kiss his neck.

“I’ve imagined doing a lot more to you, too. Many times.” He let her continue to kiss and bite his neck. “I wish we could run away together, just ditch work one day.”

Hannah took a break from her nibbling. “We could, you know. Just call me before I get off the train, and instead of taking the red line to work I’ll take it to Hollywood, and we can have a fun day together.” She settled back in the passenger seat. “Oh, Danny, why don’t we?”

He looked at her regrettably. “Come on, Hannah. You remember our deal. We can’t let this thing we have get in the way of our lives, and that includes our jobs. Our goals for success.”

She looked at him. “And then there’s that girl…”

“Akie,” he said. It felt awkward to say her name at that moment. Hannah hesitated. “I’m sorry, Hannah—I think maybe that was insensitive.”

“No—it’s just that…”

Danny raised an eyebrow. “Just that what?”

Hannah took a deep breath before speaking. “What if I could guarantee you that the next time you see Akie, she will never want to leave again?”

about the author

Samantha Egret was born of a passion for writing and a desire to create an open dialog on female sexuality. Frustrated at the tendency of the media to portray females as necessarily sexually submissive and men as authorities on pleasing women, she set our to write a work of Erotica that defies this paradigm. After all, a woman is the foremost authority on her own body, not a man! In Desire's Anthem: A Rock 'N' Roll Romance, an established suburban mother not only awakens to her own desirability, but also teaches a known Lothario a thing or two about pleasing a woman.

Samantha seeks to encourage women not only to assert themselves sexually, but to truly believe that they themselves are worthy sources of desire. Says Samantha: "A woman that not only embraces her sexuality but also knows she can BE the fantasy emanates a power and a confidence that is truly a force with which to be reckoned: and it's damn sexy to her partner, too!" Her ultimate goal: to help ALL women see the absolute fabulousness in themselves! Samantha resides in Downtown Los Angeles, among the high-rises and large-living, a graduate of the high-stakes world of public relations. Desire's Anthem is her first novel.

Armchair BEA Day 1 ~ Introductions with @LindseyGray11

I can't believe the time has finally arrived! I've been looking forward to being part of Armchair BEA all year. This is my third year participating as an author and a blogger. So much has happened over the past year here on my blog and I hope you all like the new layout and look.

This year looks to be another spectacular one! Thanks to the Armchair BEA staff for organizing such a wonderful event for all of those who can't make it in person.

The agenda this year is packed full of fun. So let's kick this year off right with the answers to the burning questions the ABEA staff has come up with this year!

1. Tell us a bit about yourself.

My name is Lindsey Gray. Some people call me crazy, but I only respond to Lindsey. I have so many titles, sometimes it is hard to keep count. I'm a wife, mom of two, an author, a blogger, a book formatter, and radio show host. I've been blogging for about four and a half years. I love to read and I've busted my goal for the year in April. I try to review several books a month and thank heaven for Goodreads or I would never keep it all straight. Check out My Blog Reviews shelf to see what I mean.

This year I've added another passion of mine to this blog. FOOD. Most Tuesdays I post Tempting Tuesdays, a fun and informative post giving step by step instructions of delicious recipes I find on the web. (Mostly on Pinterest.) I love finding yummy things to make while still having time to read and write.

It can be any sub genre of romance, it just has to have that love kick in there somewhere. I think my love for all things romance stems from my watching soap operas with my mom as a kid. I can remember watching Days of Our Lives everyday cuddled up with my mom. My favorite couple when I watched full time was Jack and Jennifer. Their love story was so crazy and complicated, but I loved it in the heyday. Plus, that show had all different kinds of romance, even paranormal. Remember when Marlena was possessed? Yeah, I can't bleach those yellow eyes from my brain.

Here are some of my favorites from the last year. Click covers to go to Goodreads.

AustenlandNellie (The Brides of San Francisco, #1)Annie (The Brides of San Francisco #2)Passion and Propriety (Hearts of Honour, Book 1)

Paranormal / Dystopian

The Thornless Rose (Elizabethan Time Travel #1)The One (The Selection, #3)Rue ToulouseUnscheduled Departure

Young Adult

The SeventhCassidy Jones and the Luminous (Cassidy Jones Adventures, #4)Held (Gone, #2)

Bride in Bloom (The Beachy Bride, #1)In Your Dreams (Blue Heron #4)Another Shot at Love (What's Love???, #1)Tucked AwayBeautiful Secret (Beautiful Bastard, #4)

3. What is the book at the top of your TBR pile?

I actually have two and I'm not sure which one I'm going to read first. One is a dystopian audiobook and the other is a historical, so I guess it just depends on what kind of mood I'm in the next time I get a me break.

Duty and Desire (Hearts of Honour, #2)The Heir (The Selection, #4)

4. What are you most looking forward to reading this summer.

C.L. Parker is releasing the first book in her new Monkey Business Trio, Playing Dirty. I loved her Million Dollar Duet books so I'm excited to see what she brings with this new series.

Playing Dirty (Monkey Business Trio, #1)

5. If you were stranded on a deserted island, what author would you take with you and why?

Technically, author isn't his main gig, but since he has published more books than I have, I'm going with survivalist Bear Grylls. If he can't get us off the island he can at least keep us alive with his infinite knowledge of the great wild world.

Today is just day one. I look forward to blogging throughout Armchair BEA 15 and chatting with all of you.

Make sure to join us for our Twitter parties. Last year was such a blast! I can't wait to join in again this year.
