Out of the Dark by April Emerson
Coming December 4th, 2014
from The Writer's Coffee Shop Publishing House

With college behind her, Carina Porter sits on an airplane dreaming of what’s in store when she lands in Italy. She’s resolved to experience an indulgent adventure, break away from her sensible nature, and take risks.

When handsome Stefan Savano sits beside her, those risks take on a whole new twist. He’s dashing and Carina is swept away in tales of his family and vineyard. When they land, the adventure she imagined becomes a chance to spend time with a man she just met. Carina falls hard, but soon learns not all is as it seems at Savano Vineyard.

When Carina meets Stefan’s nephew, Enzo, their undeniable attraction grows each day no matter how hard they fight it. As Carina learns what true love is, she has to choose between an unhappy existence and a life of passion. Her decision could do more than destroy a family—it could be fatal.

He pulls a grape from the bunch, and his gaze is glued to mine. “Come here.”

I walk toward him. My will to do anything else is nonexistent. I stand just a breath away.

“Close your eyes,” he says.

My heart rate increases and beads of sweat begin to drip down my back—possibly from the sun, but most likely from Stefan—as I obey.

“Open your mouth.” He commands me, and with my eyes closed, his voice sounds so haunting, so suave.

Again, I do as he says. The flesh of the fruit is pressed against my lips, and he runs it around my mouth but doesn’t place it inside. Then, he removes it.

“Lick your lips.” I do as he says. The flavor is sharp and tart, but there’s a lingering sweetness. I say nothing, but with eyes closed, I await further instructions and am not disappointed. This time his voice is even closer, and I feel his hand on my hip.

“Open again.” I part my lips, and the small fruit is placed inside. I let it roll around my tongue before puncturing its flesh, and the sweet, tart flavor overwhelms my taste buds. It’s heaven. As I chew and swallow the fruit, I’m aware of his hand on my body, and though my eyes are closed, I can feel his gaze all over me. His grip tightens momentarily, and he slides his hands up my back and into my hair.

“Open your eyes.” As soon as I do, he tugs my head back and touches his lips to mine, sharing in the sweet flavor of the grape. His kiss is slow at first, then our tongues touch, and I taste only him. I slide my arms around his shoulders and pull him into me. I want him to know that I want this. I want him. My neck sways to the side as he forces my mouth open further, and he lets out a moan. It’s a guttural sound filled with desire. His hand slides down my back, over the curve of my ass . . . He stops.

“Please,” I beg, but he shakes his head.

“I’m finding it very difficult to remain a gentleman around you.”

I raise my eyebrow. “So, don’t.”

Fourteen-year-old Cassidy Jones wakes up the morning after a minor accident in the laboratory of a world-renowned geneticist to discover that her body has undergone some bizarre physical changes. Her senses, strength, and speed have been radically enhanced.

After exploring her newfound abilities, Cassidy learns that the geneticist, Professor Serena Phillips, is missing and that foul play is suspected. That is, until she meets the professor's brilliant and mysterious fifteen-year-old son, Emery. An unlikely duo, they set out to find Emery's mother, who is key in explaining Cassidy's newly acquired superpowers.

Their lives are put at risk when they find themselves embroiled in a dangerous, action-packed adventure. Soon they are forced to confront a maniacal villain willing to do anything - including murder - to reach his own ambitious goals.

Review of Cassidy Jones and The Luminous

Every time I read a Cassidy Jones book, I don't see how the series can get any better. Elise Stokes is a master storyteller and has developed Cassidy and the cast of characters around her to perfection. Going into book four, Cassidy Jones and The Luminous, I expected another bone shaking thrill ride and I got it and so much more.

Cassidy is a bit seasoned now and more comfortable with herself as a super human. Now that her family knows of her abilities and why the Phillips family has moved across the street, she is able to relax and let go of the mounting stress of keeping secrets from the people she loved most.

One person Cassidy still kept in the dark was her friend and crush, Jared. I started seeing Jared in a different light through book three. I loved the development of his character even more in this adventure. Unfortunately, Jared finds out Cassidy's secret the hard way when he's attacked in his own home and Cassidy is the one that saves him. With help from her best friend, Emery Phillips, his parents, and the Jones family, Cassidy is able to calm most of Jared's fears about her "condition".

I loved so many things about this book. The idea of The Luminous was something I had never heard before. They were unique and ingenious little villains. The new relationships Cassidy is developing with her family now that her secret is out is a testament of a loving family. After a night of near death experiences, she arrives home after three am to find her parents and twin awake and waiting for the details of her nighttime adventure. The fact that Cassidy has a bigger support system now has me breathing a little easier.

One of the things I found I loved the most was the friendship that developed between the two boys that had Cassidy on their romantic radar, Emery and Jared. Becoming confidants in Cassidy's secret world forced an unlikely comradery between the boys which I enjoyed more than I thought I would. I've seen bits and pieces of Emery's genuine affection for Cassidy from the beginning. Jared was another story. Once his life was endangered and he learned on Cassidy's secret, his true feelings for her were evident. Even though fifteen-year-old Cassidy isn't supposed to date, that didn't stop both boys from placing themselves in romantic situations with the heroine. My heartstrings plucked a joyous tune in chapter 16 when Emery got his flirt on with Cassidy, something that I had been looking forward to since book one. Now, I believe there is a real competition. Cassidy is discovering that she and Emery are linked in more ways than one, changing her feelings for her closest friend and confidant.

With several laughs, tears, and bitten fingernails, I came to the end of this book as an even bigger Cassidy fan than I was before. Elise Stokes has entranced me with Cassidy's world, her family, her friends, and even her enemies. I rest easy in the knowledge that Cassidy's story is far from over. I look forward to reading more of Cassidy's thrilling adventures.

Thank you to Elise Stokes for creating such a brilliant series and sharing it with me in exchange for an honest review.

About the Author

Elise Stokes lives with her husband and four children. She was an elementary school teacher before becoming a full-time mom. With a daughter in middle school and two in high school, Elise’s understanding of the challenges facing girls in that age range inspired her to create a series that will motivate girls to value individualism, courage, integrity, and intelligence. The stories in Cassidy Jones Adventures are fun and relatable, and a bit edgy without taking the reader uncomfortably out of bounds. Cassidy Jones and the Secret Formula, Cassidy Jones and Vulcan's Gift, and Cassidy Jones and the Seventh Attendant are the first three books in the series. Book Four, Cassidy Jones and the Luminous, was released in September of 2014.
