Discover the second installment in the Destiny in Deadwood Series.
Read it as a part of a series or as a stand alone!

Release Date: May 2014
Genre: Historical Romance. Western.

All Liam Anderson wanted after the War Between the States, was a little peace. After seventeen years in the army, he’s tired of fighting and killing. Having lost his beloved wife to influenza, he’s tired of hurting. And seeing his baby brother framed for murder, he’s tired of injustice.

He left everything behind to help his brothers escape, packed up his children and possessions, and took them all to a gold claim in Deadwood.

Miss Eleanor Smith is a thirty-two year-old spinster. She gave up her dream of a home and family a long time ago. Instead, she has spent her life traveling the world, ministering to the weak, the injured, the poor, and the forgotten, following her preacher father from one hell hole to another.

From what she’s seen of men and the world, she’s better off taking care of herself. And she gets along just fine, until she literally falls into Liam’s arms, gets in the middle of a fight that isn’t hers, and becomes a pawn for an enemy’s revenge.

Deadwood was supposed to be a fresh start for Liam Anderson and his younger brothers, but trouble followed him and his children. And when Eleanor disappears, only Liam can rescue her. The headstrong, independent woman awoke his dead passion, but refused to surrender to his touch. Can he convince her that merely surviving isn’t enough? Despite his sins, he's the only man who can save her, and she's the only woman strong enough to heal his broken heart.

Review

When Liam Anderson bought a gold claim in Deadwood, he had no idea what was in store for him. His younger brothers, Zach and Jake, were running from the law after Jake's fiancee was murdered and Jake was blamed. Now, the Anderson's have settled in Deadwood and Jake has married spitfire Becky with a baby on the way. Liam takes advantage of a brief period of contentment to call in some favors and get both his brothers cleared. After all but one end is tied up, Liam returns to Deadwood and literally runs into Eleanor "Ellie" Smith, the Preacher's spinster daughter. Even with his tumultuous relationship with God, Liam sets out to court Ellie with the intent of marriage within months. He wants a mother for his children and a companion in his bed, but holds the firm belief he will never love again.

This is the fourth novel I've read by Cynthia Woolf and the action packed romance just keeps getting better! In this second installment of the Destiny in Deadwood series, I got to see a side of Liam that was hidden in the first book. From my impression of him in Redeemed by a Rebel, I thought he would be devoted to his family and his claim, no room for love in his life. I was elated to read that Liam was developing genuine feeling for Ellie despite the loss of his wife, Mary.

My heart broke for Ellie while reading about how she saw herself as plain and unattractive. Even Liam's brother, Zach, comments on Ellie's appearance and can't imagine what Liam would see in her. Ellie was a woman of thirty-two who had never known or expected to know romantic love. Her reactions to Liam's advances were so honest and pure, I felt like I was experiencing them with her.

The way Woolf weaves the story of the budding relationship had me reading the entire book in less than a day. With a pinch of danger, a dash of lust, and a dollop of romance, Healed by a Heart creates the perfect recipe for a best selling romance!

Thanks so much to Cynthia Woolf and Black Lion Tours for gifting me with a copy of Healed by a Heart in exchange for an honest review. I hope all the hinting Woolf did in this installment means Zach's story is up next. I guess I'll just have to wait and see.

PROLOGUE

April 1876 St. Louis, Missouri
Liam Anderson sat in front of a blazing fire, in his pajamas and robe, puffing on his pipe, reading, for the last time in this house. The place he’d called home for so many years. The kids were asleep upstairs. Sleep had eluded him and he’d risen to read until he got tired.

BAM! BAM! BAM!

He looked up from the book he read and glanced at the mantel clock. One of the few things he hadn’t packed away. “What in the world? Who would be out in this weather at this hour?"

"What the hell?” said Liam, when he opened the door to his two younger brothers. “Jake? Zach? What are you two doing here? It’s the middle of the night.”

Zach growled from behind Jake. “Are you going to let us in or make us stand in this rain all night?”

“Come in. Zach put that gun away,” said Liam.

“Can’t until the kid here,” he poked Jake in the back with his gun, “is inside and we’ve talked to you.

Jake, the youngest of his brothers, walked into the foyer of the house, followed closely by Zach. He stared down the hallway, packed with luggage and boxes down to the parlor, but didn’t question it. Didn’t even seem to notice that the house was packed up ready to move.

Both of them were haggard, completely worn out. Their coats were soaked through and they couldn’t have been comfortable. He’d never seen them looking so exhausted or…desperate.

“Sorry to do this to you, Liam. I know you’re leaving tomorrow,” said Zach as he holstered his gun and dripped water onto the foyer floor. He threw his had onto one of the steamer trunks. Jake followed suit.

It was times like these that the difference between his brothers was so striking. Zach with his nearly black hair and dark blue eyes. There was one in every generation with the coloring of their Gypsy great grandmother, Zach was theirs and their father had been the one in his generation. It was rare to have two gypsies in the same family, usual it was an uncle or aunt rather than a parent of the latest child with the coloring.

Jake with dark blond, overly long hair and light blue eyes most resembled their dear mother.

Liam was somewhere between the two, with light brown hair and gray eyes. His children were different as night and day, too. Ten year old David resembled Liam not only physically but mentally too. David always seemed to weigh his words before he spoke them. Whereas Hannah, the gypsy of her generation, said whatever came into her little head. She was only five, but even at her age, David had been as contemplative as he was now.

He smiled thinking of his children. They were his joy. His reason for living. He closed his eyes and grounded himself in the present and answered Jake. “Yes. At first light. Now, tell me what’s going on and why you brought Jake here at gun point.”

“Only way I could get him to come,” growled Zach.

“And?” Liam said, exasperated. “Don’t make me beat the story out of you word by word, little brother. Just tell me the problem.”

Liam pointed at the two chairs in front of the fire and then went to the fireplace and stoked the banked coals back to a roaring blaze. He really didn’t need this now, not when he was leaving in the morning. Not when he was so close to putting the old, hurtful memories behind him.

Cynthia Woolf is the author of six historical western romance books and one short story with more books on the way. She was born in Denver, Colorado and raised in the mountains west of Golden. She spent her early years running wild around the mountain side with her friends.

Their closest neighbor was one quarter of a mile away, so her little brother was her playmate and her best friend. That fierce friendship lasted until his death in 2006.

Cynthia was and is an avid reader. Her mother was a librarian and brought new books home each week. This is where young Cynthia first got the storytelling bug. She wrote her first story at the age of ten. A romance about a little boy she liked at the time.

Cynthia loves writing and reading romance. Her first western romance Tame A Wild Heart, was inspired by the story her mother told her of meeting Cynthia’s father on a ranch in Creede, Colorado. Although Tame A Wild Heart takes place in Creede that is the only similarity between the stories. Her father was a cowboy not a bounty hunter and her mother was a nursemaid (called a nanny now) not the ranch owner.

Cynthia credits her wonderfully supportive husband Jim and the great friends she's made at CRW for saving her sanity and allowing her to explore her creativity.

blurb
Imogen Gorecki has a problem—her twin sister just got engaged, and guess who’s the best man? That’s right, her scum-of-an-ex-boyfriend whom she caught cheating with a bottle-blonde, with fake breasts and a stripper’s flexibility. There’s a disturbing possibility her eyes will never recover.

Gen needs a date for the engagement party, but finding Mr. Perfect in a time crunch is proving impossible. Just when she’s about to give up, she face-plants into the crotch of the sexiest guy she’s ever met.

Matt Sesnick is everything Gen wants in a man —except he’s not interested in a relationship. Can she convince Matt to take another shot at love, or will Gen’s pregnant, hormonal older sister, her bridezilla twin, and all of her past Mr. Wrongs get in the way of their happily-ever-after?

Review of Another Shot at Love

Imogen can't catch a break from her meddling family. When her twin sister, Lexie, gets engaged to her scumball ex's best friend, her family is on a mission to get her a date for the engagement party. But Imogen, Gen to her friends, is not up for the losers that keep getting thrown her way. When she actually gets dumped by a guy she had zero interest in the first place, she's done with set ups. When getting up to leave, she accidentally gets a face full of the crotch of the man of her dreams.

Matt is handsome, sweet, charming, and funny, but he's not looking for a relationship. After a shared meal, Gen doesn't plan on seeing him again. Her family's harping doesn't slow down and she blurts out that she is dating Matt to get them off her back. Mom and big sis butt in and get Matt back in Gen's life in an unusual way.

I can't go much further without spoiling things, but Gen and her sisters have a wild ride as the date of Lexie's engagement party creeps closer and Matt and Gen grow closer. I could completely relate with Gen since I'm the middle of three sisters. I have always been the one that was not like the others, so seeing things from Gen's point of view was a little like some of my own arguments with my sisters.

One thing I absolutely loved about this book is the way it made me feel while I was reading it. I read with a smile on my face and laughed more times than I could count. I gasped when something unexpected happened and got teary-eyed when the sisters got to an emotional breaking point.

It seems Rom/Com's are more of a movie or television thing these days. I love that Niecey Roy has brought this one to the page. I love free-spirited Gen and all of her wacky family. Roy made Matt not just eye candy, but a truly witty guy with a genuine heart. I can't wait to read Lexie's story, Done with Love, as soon as I can.

Thanks so much to Niecey Roy for gifting me with a copy of Another Shot at Love in exchange for an honest review.

excerpt

“You really should change that light bulb,” Matt said, glancing around us.

“I know.” I pushed aside my wallet to dig to the bottom of my oversized purse. “I kind of take for granted that this is supposed to be a safe neighborhood.”

“Until an alien abducts you off your poorly lit porch.”

“Very funny.” I glanced up from my purse with a smile. “But really, it’s late. You could have been home by now.”

“Gen, I’m glad to walk you to your door. I would have worried about you if I hadn’t.”
I considered him as we stood there on my porch, the light flickering above us. I didn’t want him to leave, but I didn’t know how to ask him to stay. Maybe I could ask him in for a drink, though I’d
already had enough.

But I have those cupcakes…

Yeah. I could offer him cupcakes. They weren’t his favorite, chocolate with sprinkles, but yellow cake with milk chocolate frosting had to be a close second, right? Hadn’t he said a cupcake will fix everything?

“I’m really glad we went out tonight.” His voice made me jump and I dropped the keys. We both bent to pick them up at the same time and bumped foreheads.

“Sorry,” he said.

“It’s okay, I’m fine.” I clasped my forehead and laughed. Probably, I sounded hysterical. Like a rabid hyena. I couldn’t even look him in the eye when I took the keys from him. “Thanks for inviting me. I had a lot of fun tonight.”

“Me too,” he said.

I put the key into the lock, turning it slowly as I struggled with what to do about him and my out of control libido. Unlocking my door hadn’t given me enough time to figure things out, though, so I tried to prolong sliding the patio door open. That didn’t take long either, and I hesitated in the doorway, still unsure. I opened my mouth to ask him in, but nothing came out. So I stepped backward through the doorway, my gaze glued to his. After a moment, he followed me inside, part of his face lost in shadows.

Time stood still. My tongue darted out to lick my lips, and I lifted up onto my toes as he lowered his head to meet me halfway. The smell of his cologne surrounded me and my eyes drifted shut. He grasped me loosely around my back, pulling me close, sending shivers coursing through my body. His breath caressed my skin, his lips just a whisper away from mine, and my lips parted…

blurb
Once upon a time…

Bridal boutique owner, Alexis Gorecki, used to believe in happily-ever-afters—until
prince charming turned into a toad.

Months after being blindsided by her own horrific wedding scandal, Lexie is desperately trying to keep her boutique afloat in the wake of all the bad publicity. Waging war against her evil almost-in-laws—the people who will stop at nothing to ruin her reputation—sounded much better in her head. Lexie's strawberries and cream personality really isn’t cut out for taser guns and blackmail.

To complicate matters, Lexie's first love is back in town with his sexy green eyes and out-of-control abs. He already broke her heart once before, the beast. Leo Moss has always been her weakness and he's made it perfectly clear what he wants. Can he convince Lexie she's not done with love just yet?

“Damn it, Lex, you keep pushing me away and it’s pissing me off.” He ran his hands through his hair. “I’m not going to fight over you with some guy who’s already gone.”

“Me pushing you away has nothing to do with Jeremy,” I said and crossed my arms. What I didn’t say was that it had everything to do with Leo, with our past, with me not wanting to get my heart broken again. Why couldn’t he understand that? Why couldn’t he read my mind and know all the questions I had about why he’d broken up with me the way he had, and why he was suddenly here, again, in my life, torturing me with feelings I didn’t want to have. Feelings that scared the hell out of me?

His face lowered, and suddenly his lips were near my ear lobe. I sucked in a breath. “Did he make you feel like this?” he whispered, and then his lips pressed softly against the sensitive skin of my neck. “Or this?” His lips captured my earlobe, a flicker of wet heat, and then it was gone, replaced by a draft of cold air seeping through the crack under the door. “Or this.”

His lips captured mine and stars exploded behind my closed eyes. Everything was warm, my entire body weightless and fuzzy. The kiss was slow; the heat of it felt all the way down to my toes. His tongue slid against mine in a silken kiss of passion that erupted inside of me.

about the author
clip_image037
Niecey Roy knew she wanted to be a writer from a very young age, but her moment of enlightenment came after watching the movie You’ve Got Mail. It was then she realized her place in life, and happily parked her butt on writing romance. Her dream was to create sexy vixens, hunky, half-naked heroes, and above all, romance; lots and lots of butterflies in the belly, breathless first kisses and happily-ever-afters.

Most days she can be found at home at a cluttered desk, pounding her tired little fingers away on a keyboard with nothing but black pepper flavored sunflower seeds and Visine as her weapons for mass-romance-novel-creation. When her fingers need a break, you’ll find her at a table with friends, drinking a few martinis and showing off a new pair of (sometimes ridiculous) high heels. She’s usually the loudest at the table and most often the one snorting with laughter.

Niecey is the author of Fender Bender Blues, a contemporary romantic comedy published by The Wild Rose Press. Her new romantic comedy series, What’s Love??? includes Another Shot At Love, and Done With Love releasing April 2014.
