Sneak Peek Sunday

The Guardians

Book 2 in the MORE Trilogy, by T.M. Franklin

The Guardians doesn't come out until November, but today we get a sneak peek from the sequel to MORE...and it looks like Ava's still running into quite a bit of trouble!

The Guardians

It’s not every day a girl discovers she’s not entirely human and unlocks hidden powers strong enough to make even the First Race take notice. Then again, Ava Michaels is no ordinary girl.

Now, the Race’s Ruling Council wants her under their control, and that’s just the beginning of her problems. Her boyfriend, Caleb Foster, has disappeared—accused of betraying the Race—and Ava herself is implicated in a crime she didn’t commit.

Clearing their names will mean uncovering a web of deceit and intrigue with Ava woven right in the center. To unravel the strands, she joins forces with some unlikely allies; a Protector who once haunted her nightmares, a young girl with secrets as unexpected as Ava’s, and a group of rebel Guardians who have their own fight against the Council.

Together they stand in a battle to find the truth, bring Caleb home, and secure Ava’s freedom—not to mention save her life.

~Excerpt From The Guardians~

“How far?” he asked. “Do we have time to get out?”

Ava reached out with her gift, a sinking feeling settling in her stomach. “No. They’re too close. Probably already at the cave entrance.”

Tiernan’s jaw flexed as he looked around the cavern, trying to come up with a plan of action. He signaled for them to follow him as he crossed the room, taking up a spot against the wall next to the opening leading to the tunnel going outside. He flexed his fingers around the gun, and said in a low voice, “You’ll have to create a distraction again. With any luck, we can get them headed down that other tunnel before they realize we’re here. Maybe with so many Race imprints, it will be hard for them to pinpoint our exact location.”

“You think that will really work?” Ava asked.

“Probably not.” He shrugged. “So you might have to reenact that trick with the door—maybe with that crate over there.” He gestured with the gun across the room, looking at her sideways. “Do you think you can do that?”

Ava knew what he was asking. Could she hurt someone? Could she possibly kill someone? She’d done it before, with Arthur, but that was spur-of-the-moment, unplanned—a them-or-us situation where she didn’t have time to think about it beforehand. This was different. She looked at Emma, clutching her hand, innocent and scared, and thought of Caleb.

Somewhere out there. And once the Council learned Caleb was still on the run, they’d most likely take matters into their own hands. In other words, hunt Caleb down. She couldn’t let that happen. They had to find him first.

With grim determination, she nodded sharply. “I can do it.”

They waited in silence, and Ava could feel each step as the group got closer. She could tell when Tiernan felt them as well. He squared his shoulders, clenched his fists, and braced his feet in a wide stance, preparing for a fight. She turned to the tunnel across the room and readied her own weapons, calling on her gift as the first footsteps echoed through the cavern. She reached out for the metal door she’d knocked down, picking it up and letting it clatter against the stone floor. The sound amplified in the tunnel, and it wasn’t long before their pursuers ran into the cavern. They huddled in the shadows as the four Rogues scanned the room, but to Ava’s surprise, they didn’t even seem to notice them.

Then she realized it wasn’t only her own gift she was feeling. Where she held Emma’s hand, she felt the tingle of unfamiliar power running along her skin. She gaped at the girl, whose eyes were closed and brow creased in concentration, and watched as the Rogues took off down the far tunnel.

Tiernan tugged on Ava’s sleeve, and she stumbled after him.

The three of them ran down the tunnel in the opposite direction, and Ava felt a rush of hope as the light of the entrance finally showed ahead.

They raced out into the sunshine, and Ava stopped and turned around.

“What are you doing?” Tiernan snapped, tucking his gun back into his pants. “Let’s go.”

“Just buying us some time,” Ava said, calling on her gift again.

With a low rumble, the front of the cave shuddered and collapsed in on itself, kicking up a cloud of dust. When it finally cleared, a pile of dirt and rocks lay where the entrance had been.

“Nice,” Tiernan said with an appreciative grin. “Remind me never to tick you off.”

The summary caught my interest with this story. The hint of mystery in both Lyndsey and Nick's lives was just enough to get me to read it. Plus, having a lead character named Lyndsey didn't hurt. lol.

The story begins with Lyndsey and Nick meeting at the Hilo Bar & Grill where Lyndsey works in Hilo, Hawaii. I was instantly transported to the tropical city and took a seat on the deck to watch the story unfold before me. Laurence created such a state that I could imagine the wind in my hair and the smell of the ocean air.

I was in the perfect frame of mind as the story continued. Laurence kept me guessing as to what the mystery of Lyndsey's past entailed. Nick wasn't shy about his story, but you get an idea that he suffered a trauma while serving in Afghanistan pretty early on in the novel. Both are not sure a relationship is a good idea at the point they each are in their lives, but Nick can't stop himself from wanting Lyndsey. Lyndsey feels the same, but has better restraint. Her rejection doesn't detour Nick and he eventually wears her down. The development of their relationship was not all hearts and flowers. Laurence gave a very realistic picture of two people that suffered greatly at the hands of others and how they came to heal together and separately.

Laurence not only strongly developed her main characters, but gave a solid picture of the secondary characters as well. I loved Lessa & Raoul, Lyndsey's surrogate parents and owners of the grill. They were nosey, pushy, and loved Lyndsey unconditionally. Nick's best friend, Gabe, was a riot. His carefree attitude and devotion to his friend made me love the story even more. The best was Lyndsey's dog, Jack. He was the only remnant of her former life left and he really ended up helping her connect with the other characters in the story.

This is the first book in the Hiding From Love series. I am looking forward to reading the rest of the series as it is released. "Camouflaged" is a novella due out in October that will give us a glimpse of Gabe's life in Afghanistan. Two other full-length novels are planned for the series. "Concealed" due out in November and "Buried" due out in February 2014.

Thanks so much to Selena Laurence and CBL Book Tours for including me in the blog tour for this novel, "Hidden".

Blogger Book Fair ~ Author of "No Strings Attached", Lily Bishop

The 2013 Blogger Book Fair is in full swing with tons of activities. What to know what fun were having all over the internet? Check out the BBF Answer Page for all the links to this years activities!

Laura Todd attends a conference in Las Vegas and meets Fox Thornton, a consultant to the hotel industry. Far away from her normally quiet life, Laura is swept away by her strong attraction for Fox. They both know the score, and neither expects to see the other again. After their hot weekend, circumstances bring them back together in Miami, where Fox is investigating a suspected embezzlement and Laura is the prime suspect. Can their brief romance rekindle in the real world, where suspicions and misunderstandings lurk behind every corner? Will their no-strings-attached affair evolve into a strong relationship, or is it destined to stay in Vegas?

Far Away Places in No Strings Attached

No Strings Attached was born when Lily Bishop and her husband took a tenth anniversary trip to Las Vegas. Laura Todd lives in Miami and Fox Thornton lives in Atlanta. During part of the book they travel to the Bahamas on a yacht, and they travel in private jets.

Fox moves in some pretty expensive circles. When writing this book, it was exciting doing research on how the other half lives. I looked at some exclusive hotel suites in Las Vegas that have butlers, and I looked at actual yachts and private planes that were listed for sale online. Of course, I didn’t buy either, but it was fun to look.

I wanted to think about what would happen if a traditional, “good” girl hooked up with a guy in Las Vegas. Would she feel guilty, since this is something she never does, or would she just go with the flow, knowing she would never see him again? What if what happened in Vegas doesn’t stay in Vegas?

Fox Thornton stared at the cards nestled against the green felt. Focus, man, focus. Something had to change. A fun hand of blackjack had turned into a bloodbath. After being in meetings all day, he had planned a quick hand of blackjack, but two hours later, he had lost more than he intended. He blamed his losses on the gorgeous blonde at the end of the table and her sexy silver dress. How could he leave with her if she made no effort to leave?

Her hair reminded him of wheat in summer and it curled around her shoulders with a devil-may-care attitude. Her eyes shone like dark amber whiskey and glowed with an inner fire when she smiled—which was often—and frequently in his direction. She leaned forward and he caught a glimpse of a little dark hollow between her breasts. He stifled a groan.

He shifted position to relieve the pressure caused by a wave of desire. How long had it been since he'd been this hard for a stranger? Not since college ten years ago. As she considered the cards, her tongue peeked between rosy lips. What a turn-on.

Fox looked for any of the managers he knew from the remodel, and saw James, a pit boss who had joined him for drinks one night. He sent him a text and then moved over to the vacant seat beside her.

"The luck's better over here," he said with a smile, but then he cut his eyes away, not wanting to appear too eager. She spared him a quick glance before turning back to her cards.

Sitting beside her made things worse. He smelled roses every time she moved, and now he had a full view of her long, tanned legs. One of her legs bounced up and down, betraying her nervousness. He blocked out the image of those legs wrapped around his waist or he would never be able to stand. As soon as James closed the table, he would ask her to dinner.

Her bizarre play was screwing up the natural order of the cards. She laughed when the cards fell her way, and when they didn't, she seemed stunned, as if she should be able to predict the card order.

If anyone else had been playing that inconsistently, he would have switched tables and cut his losses. Now he was so intrigued he couldn't walk away without a phone number.

The girl's strapless dress fit against her like a second skin, and he couldn't look away. While they waited for the next round of cards, she fidgeted with a silver-threaded scarf. He could imagine that scarf in his hands as he pulled her to him ... He had to get control of himself.

When the waitress brought drinks, he took care of the tip, and his blonde beauty flashed him a smile. When she won for the third time in as many hands, he saluted her with a flourish. She repaid him by blowing him a kiss. Now he had her attention.

Lily Bishop was born in a small town near Athens, Georgia. She attended the University of Georgia and received a Bachelor's in English, and then enrolled in the MFA program in Creative Writing at Purdue University. After a year, she left the program and moved to Atlanta. Like a siren's call, Athens wanted her back, and she returned to Athens where she received her Master's in Public Administration. She now lives in the Upstate of South Carolina and works full-time as a database administrator for a university. She is married to her best friend, and they have two children. When she is not writing, she and her family are playing German or Euro-style board games.

Lily writes contemporary romance and romantic suspense, and her goal is to blur the lines between romance, chick lit, and women's fiction. Her books are peppered with family members who make things complicated and couples who can't seem to find a way to be together. Lily writes with a Southern flair, but her characters find themselves in exotic locations and sometimes dangerous situations. She loves to interact with readers about her characters and stories.
