Kill Me” (A Blood Chord Novel) by Alex Owens

Genre: Paranormal Fantasy
Medium: eBook
Purchase: Amazon
Narrative: First person voice of Claire Ciappanna Adams

Goodreads Summary: Three days ago, Claire was a wife, a mother, and very much alive… then the music called for her.

Claire has one goal for the conference— to land a few whales so that her boss will give her a badly needed raise. She pitches and prays while courting the music industry elite until her plans are derailed by hotness-in-high-heels.

Bette is at the conference on a mission—to find a human with untapped talents that she can mold and control. Bette uses her cursed violin to lure Claire in with a haunting song, which unravels Claire’s life as her new talents emerge. To make matters worse, Claire is attracted to two unlikely people— Bette and her hunky associate, Gregor. Both can light Claire’s fire, but is either of them the only one?

Unfortunately for Claire, life isn’t all song lyrics and seduction. Tied to darkness by blood and power, Claire must harness her abilities if she has any hope of returning home to her daughter and regaining her former life… if that’s what she really wants.

Kill Me, the debut novel from author Alex Owens, is a quirky paranormal fantasy complete with music, magic, fangs and freaks. Be forewarned, this is not your daughter’s paranormal.

The summary of this novel enticed me and I craved to know more about the main character, Claire.

At the beginning of the story, Owens throws us into Claire's life as she attends a music conference to land some new marketing clients. It's there she meets a mysterious Italian woman, Bette.

The next morning, Claire wakes up with no memory of the night before, but something life changing did indeed happen. Throughout that day, Bette fills her in on the gaps somewhat. Claire begins to feel even stranger than she usually does. Then mid-way through the novel she meets Bette's friends, Gregor and Clive. She has an instant dislike for Clive, but is drawn to Gregor in quite the same way she's drawn to Bette. The connection she has with the three of them complicates her already chaotic life.

Due to the fact that the story is told in first person, there are some things that are left a mystery. I was a tad surprised by the steamy bits of the novel, but they were imperative to the story. I like the fact that Claire was the bread-winner of her family as her husband, Pete, is unemployed. Even through the most difficult situations she faces, her thoughts are always on her daughter, Quinn, and her well-being.

Overall, the story has great character development, a healthy dose of romantic entanglements, and an intriguing start to what is to be a fabulous series. This novel is defiantly meant for an adult audience, so keep away from the tweens. I am anxiously awaiting the rest of the series, “Kiss Me”, due out summer 2012, and “Thrill Me”, due out late 2012/early 2013.

"Socialpunk" by Monica Leonelle

Genre: Science Fiction

Medium: Hardcover and eBook

Purchase: Barnes & Noble  Amazon

Narrative: Third person

Summary: Ima would give anything to escape The Dome and learn what’s beyond its barriers, but the Chicago government has kept all its citizens on lockdown ever since the Scorched Years left most of the world a desert wasteland. When a mysterious group of hooded figures enters the city unexpectedly, Ima uncovers a plot to destroy The Dome and is given the choice between escaping to a new, dangerous city or staying behind and fighting a battle she can never win.

Ima is an everyday girl in a world that basically . . . well, it sucks. She is in love with her best friend, Dash, who for some reason is denying the romantic side of their relationship. Her father is abusive and controlling while her mother sits passively on the sidelindes watching it all. One night of excitement leads her to a train ride towards a concert that ends up changing her life forever.

At the concert, Ima meets Vaughn and is taken to a whole new world, literally. Vaughn whisks Ima and her new friend, Nahum, topside to a world they never knew existed, Silicon City.

The prologue drew me in, then the focus in chapter 1 changes to the world that Ima exists in which is completely different from that of the prologue. As I kept reading, I was drawn into that world and found myself scared and excited for Ima as she took on one challenge after another.

There were a few moments when I was sure that Ima, Vaughn, and the rest of their crew would up with the short end of the stick. Somehow, the goal that Ima set when she set foot in Silicon City was met, but the results are unexpected.

"Socialpunk" is a great read for teens and adults. The worlds Leonelle has created keep the reader on their toes and cataloguing the rules of the new environment Ima finds herself in. Overall, the book was an exciting read and the last line has left me desperate for the next book in the series, Socialmob due out in July 2012. The trilogy wraps up with Socialhood due out October 2012.

COMMENT
Only a little over three months until the long awaited sequel to "Redemption" will be published. "Revisited" will be available in paperback and e-book July 26th, 2012. We are finishing up final edits and ARC's will be available in June.

The Writer's Coffee Shop Publishing House is about to release their summer catalogue, so I thought I would give you a sneak preview of the "Revisited" cover and summary.

Summary

As the Redemption series continues, in Revisited everyone's path leads into one.
Lily Edwards, the last remaining female vampire, is facing a daunting task. She has to find Liam Caldwell, the vampire she was forced to create, and change him back to his human state.
But Lily's task will not be an easy one as fellow remaining vampires, Filipp and Debir, have been secretly plotting her demise for decades and were the ones responsible for Liam being turned.
While Liam is grateful for Filipp and Debir's guidance during his transformation into the vampire he felt destined to be, he's having second thoughts as he learns their whole plan is not what it seems. A hand-picked army of humans waits for Liam to change them into vampires at Filipp's instruction. Adding to the mix is Valentina Pavel, the last member of a coven Romanian witches, who brings forth new challenges of her own. Together, they all have Liam doing the unthinkable, pleading for a way out.
Lily's adopted daughter, Becca, is also preoccupied with a few dilemmas of her own. Discovering that the angel, Sam Fleming, is her biological father presents her with a choice to accept the powers of her birthright, or continue her human existence. She must find the answer while continuing to fight the feelings she has for fellow angel, Abe North, and her missing new love, Ian Holt.
Ian's world has been turned upside down now that the body-stealing demon, Gideon, is controlling him. Ian struggles as Gideon's decisions cause them both mental and physical pain. The only thing they agree on is their insatiable need to be with Becca at all costs.
Friends-now-turned-enemies struggle for their eternity, while enemies-turned-friends fight side by side. Will Lily's past give her the answers she needs to reach the future?

"Fifty Shades Freed" by E. L. James

Genre: Erotica

Medium: Available in Paperback and eBook

Purchase: Barnes & Noble  Amazon and check your local bookstores soon

Narrative: First person of Ana Steele Grey

Goodreads Summary: When unworldly student Ana Steele first encountered the driven, damaged young entrepreneur Christian Grey it sparked a sensual affair that changed both their lives irrevocably. Shocked, intrigued, and ultimately repelled by Christian’s singular sexual tastes, Ana demanded a deeper commitment; determined to keep her, Christian agreed.

Now, together, they have more – love, passion, intimacy, and a world of infinite possibilities. But Ana always knew that loving her Fifty Shades would not be easy, and being together poses challenges neither of them ever anticipated. Ana must somehow learn to share Christian’s opulent lifestyle without sacrificing her own integrity, identity or independence; Christian must somehow overcome his compulsion to control, and lay to rest the horrors that blighted his past and haunt his present.

Just when it seems that together their love can conquer any obstacle, misfortune, malice and fate combine to make Ana’s worst nightmares come true. Alone and desperate, she must face down the poisoned legacy of Christian’s past.

Seductive, shocking, sad and funny, Fifty Shades Freed is the compelling final volume in the Fifty Shades trilogy.

As the Fifty Shades saga continues, we find our Christian and Ana in the place we've all been hoping for all along... happily married. But are they really. Christian is as sweet and overbearing as ever, but not exactly the perfect husband. Ana is giving him a run for his money with a splash of obstinance sprinkled throughout their newlywed life. When threats are made on the home-front and real life comes to knock them down, Christian and Ana have to answer an age old question. How do you make a marriage work?

James is spot on with the tremendous chemistry that has developed over the series and brings it front and center as Ana and Christian face life threatening situations. I was completely immersed in the story from the beginning, imagining the magnificent places the two were honeymooning at. I almost felt I was right there with them when Christian and Ana rode off on their wave runners.

This novel is firmly set in the erotic genre, but it is so much more than just amazing sexual encounters between two consenting adults. It's action, real relationships, true love, and ultimate sacrifice. James has won my heart and my unwavering respect with this series. She has created a world where a woman can assert herself in the bedroom and not be ashamed of what she wants in there.

As I am saddened to see this series come to an end, I am thankful for the journey. I believe it's true when I say Christian and Ana's story has changed so many lives, often for the better. Thank you, E.L. Your words have given so many courage to find what they really want in a relationship. Family, love, and intimacy are all attainable if we look into ourselves and decide what we really want. I would venture to answer that question for many readers of the series. Christian.
